Warmaster and Giant Slayer are some of the strongest Champion masteries in Raid: Shadow Legends. Reaching tier 6 and enabling one of these masteries dramatically changes your damage output in Clan Boss because these masteries do damage based on the enemy’s MAX HP. The question which gets asked all the time is which of the two should you put on your hero? First let’s recap what each one does.
Warmaster
Has a 60% chance of inflicting bonus damage when attacking. Bonus damage is equal to 10% of the target Champion’s MAX HP or 4% of the target’s MAX HP when attacking Bosses. Bonus damage can only occur once per Skill and does not count as an extra hit.
With Warmaster, multiple hits don’t matter. You get a flat 60% chance of a “proc” (literally means “programmed random occurrence”, and is used in this case to indicate that the effect has activated).
Giant Slayer
Has a 30% chance of inflicting bonus damage when attacking. Bonus damage is equal to 7.5% of the target Champion’s MAX HP or 3% of the target’s MAX HP when attacking Bosses. Bonus damage can occur on each hit of a Skill, but does not count as an extra hit.
Giant Slayer gives each of your Champion’s hits a chance of a proc, which means the more hits a skill has the more Giant Slayer is appealing. Let’s do some math to see what to expect here:
| # Attacks | 0 procs | 1 proc | 2 procs | 3 procs | 4 procs | >1 proc |
| 1 | 70% | 30% | 0% | 0% | 0% | 30% |
| 2 | 49% | 42% | 9% | 0% | 0% | 51% |
| 3 | 34.3% | 44.1% | 18.9% | 2.7% | 0% | 65.7% |
| 4 | 24.01% | 41.16% | 26.46% | 7.56% | 0.81% | 75.99% |
This means that with a 3-hit A1 you have nearly 66% chance of getting a proc, vs. 60% for Warmaster. Furthermore, a 4-hit A1 has a nearly 76% chance of getting a proc! There are currently only three Champions with a 4-hit A1: Coldheart, Cruetraxa, and Foli.
Another very important thing to note is that, despite the damage descriptions for the masteries above, they do the same amount of damage per proc to Clan Boss. It’s not 4% or 3% as indicated in the descriptions, but rather ~45k-77k depending on the difficulty (before applying decrease defense and weaken, which increase this output).
Now, let’s use a flat damage output of 54k (which is the base in Brutal) to look at the expected damage output for the Warmaster proc and then for the Giant Slayer procs based on the # of hits your Champion is doing.
Expected Clan Boss damage (Base, Brutal difficulty)
| # of hits | Warmaster | Giant Slayer |
| 1 | 32,400 | 16,200 |
| 2 | 32,400 | 32,400 |
| 3 | 32,400 | 48,600 |
| 4 | 32,400 | 64,800 |
The key thing to note here is that the expected damage output for a 2-hit A1 is the same for Warmaster and Giant Slayer. The reason is that, with Giant Slayer, although your chance per hit is lower, you have a chance (9% to be precise) of getting 2 hits, which in the 54k base damage scenario would mean 108k damage.
This is why, unlike some other guides, I recommend using Giant Slayer for any Champion who has an expected # of hits from their skills of >=2 (especially true if the A1 is >= 2).
